Backdated 1982 Piaggio Vespa
- Park & Tilford, North Vancouver
Vespa is an Italian scooter manufactured by Piaggio. The name means wasp in Italian – and these scooters create a buzz everywhere they go. Vespa's have become one of the most iconic two-wheeled vehicles ever made. Despite this, they are quite rare in North America and it's even rarer to find one in good condition. This particular example was acquired by the seller at auction in 2020, and previously from a commercial film agency who reportedly purchased the scooter from a Vancouver enthusiast who performed the backdating and restoration.

Overview:
The Vespa P 125 X (P125X) was first presented at the Milan Show in 1977 as a new model from Piaggio. The goal behind the model was to be more focused on the youth market. Squared off lines and a larger chassis modernize this fan favourite while holding true to the brand's heritage. The modernization also included an updated speedometer, revised front suspension, which was equipped with telescopic shock absorbers, and an engine with a rating of 125cc. Production ran until 1982, making this example from the P 125 X's final year.
Drivetrain:
The P 125 X is powered by a single cylinder, air cooled 2-stroke induction engine. Vespa reported the total capacity to be 123.4cc with power being sent to the rear wheel through a 4 speed transmission shifted via the handlebar.
Exterior:
The exterior on this Vespa was reportedly backdated to cream paint by a previous caretaker and the styling choices offers nods to the brand's much loved heritage. The shield and majority of the body are finished in steel, with plastic being used sparingly in this generation of scooter. While minor, several small scuffs and chips in the paint are noted. Photos include close-ups of imperfections in the paint and trim. The seller notes what may look like corrosion between the panel gaps appears only to be dirt when inspected in person.
The scooter sits on 10" wheels that wear Mitas B14 white-wall tires. Also included is a rear mounted spare wheel wearing a Prima 51J white-walled tire which may be accessed with removal of the engine coverings.
Finally, the seat is in like-new condition and was refurbished in chocolate leatherette by a previous owner.
