Odometer: 61k Miles
Title Status: Clean (British Columbia, Canada)
Seller Update - December 3: We’ve been doing test drives (15+) with the Porsche 912 all week and it’s been running great. Unfortunately, the clutch started to grab in the lower gears during a test drive. It is suspected that the oil seepage from the rear main seal leak has made contact with the clutch, so when cold, it's very sticky in first and reverse. Further update - December 10: My mechanic came to look it the car. While not fully diagnosed, he suspects an issue with the pressure plate. The car should receive a clutch job prior to driving. The estimate for the clutch, bearings and engine seal would be about $800 in parts plus another $1,200 in labour. I have decided to allow the auction to continue. The winning bidder is welcome to have the problem properly diagnosed prior to completion of the sale. If buyer is uncomfortable moving forward with the sale, I will refund the buyer's fee and there will be no expectation to complete the sale. Please adjust your bidding accordingly.
Overview:
This 1966 Porsche 912 is powered by a 1,600cc flat-four paired with its original five-speed manual transmission. Records show the coupe underwent floorpan refurbishment, fuel tank and carburetor replacement, and was repainted by previous caretakers prior to being acquired by the seller in Spring of 2020.
Features include original Recaro seats clad in black leatherette, 15x5.5” painted KPZ steel wheels on H&R hub-centric spacers, polished wheel covers with Porsche crests, chrome bumper guards, and a 15x4.5” LKPZ spare wheel.
This short-wheelbase 912 coupe is offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, records dating to 1990 and a clean BC title in the seller’s name.
Drivetrain:
The car is powered by a 1.6-liter air cooled flat 4-cylinder, known to be from the last of the Porsche 356’s. From the factory this configurations was said to provide 102 horsepower at 5,800 rpm. The seller reports good compression, but does note an oil leak from the rear main seal when the vehicle is warm.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 902/1 five-speed manual transmission. The seller reports the synchros appear to be in good working condition and shifting is smooth, and without grinding, through all five gears.
Exterior:
Originally finished in white, the body was reportedly repainted red by a previous owner in the late 1980's. The car has since been stored in dry and heated facilities and the paint remains glossy, only showing contact wear around the door jams and a small paint crack on the hood.
The 15×5.5″ steel wheels wear 165R15 86S Metric Radial tires and include polished hubcaps showing Porsche crests.
Interior:
Interior seating is upholstered in original black leatherette. Driver and navigator Recaro seats show small imperfections and punctures that have been patched to preserve the original material from tearing further. Black carpets appear to be replacements and door cards, while original, have been patched with matching German vinyl to cover where speakers were once mounted.
VDO instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and displays for oil temperature and fuel level, though the temperature gauge does not currently function. The five-digit odometer displays just over 61k miles, approximately 2k of which have been added by the seller during his seven months of ownership.
The seller also notes a functional Blaupunkt AM/FM cassette radio and cites that the horn is currently inoperable.
Payment Note:
When you agree to purchase a vehicle on the Rally platform your credit card will be charged a 5% buyer's fee which will be collected by Rally Auctions Ltd. This is in addition to the sale price. Rally will send you the seller's contact information and you can arrange payment, shipping and complete the transaction.
Shipping:
This seller is willing to accommodate international shipping at buyer’s expense.

912Fan Rust / Tar12/10/2020 19:05:05Sorry, the tar / filler is at the front.
-
Re: Rust / Tar12/10/2020 19:52:39Please see response on original question. I should also mention the car comes with close to $20k of receipts outlining undercarriage metal work. The typical costly nightmares have been taken care of. The next owner may choose to fully restore, fix up the panel gaps, or drive as is. For me, the experience of owning a 912 was the enjoyment of driving it, not perfection. If the car doesn't sell here I will likely hold onto it for decades to come and improve it with each winter season.

912Fan Front hood fit / any rust12/10/2020 18:58:46Do you know if the car was in a front end collision? The hood fit (arch of the hood high in the middle) with the fenders is very poor. Is there any rust remaining in the car? Looks like a lot of heavy tar / filler in the rear floor area? Thank you.
-
Re: Front hood fit / any rust12/10/2020 19:47:10Hi 912Fan, I don't have any records of a collision, but it is entirely possible. The hood currently sits about 3-4mm forward. I suspect this is largely responsible for the gap. In addition, the fenders are about 2mm wide on each side. Fixing these gaps was going to be my winter project as the imperfections bother me too. In terms of rust, there is no visible rust on the entire body of the car. As with most cars restored in the 90's, I'm sure filler was used prior to the red paint, but I can it's held up very well. The car has been stored indoors since the paint job and there are no bubbles. In addition, I've had the interior panels off and the body is very solid from the inside.

tpainter Numbers marching engine + trans12/06/2020 17:47:29Are the engine and transmission original? Numbers matching?
-
Re: Numbers marching engine + trans12/06/2020 18:34:36I have an older certificate indicating the transmission is matching. The engine is listed as unconfirmed. From what I understand, there has been some debate about Porsche's ability to confirm these things and they no longer offer the service of confirming numbers matching, but I could be mistaken. Here is from their website: We are pleased to offer you a Certificate of Authenticity for your Porsche. This unique document includes your vehicle’s original factory-installed options, exterior and interior color, engine type and transmission type, production completion date (Birth Date) and manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP), dependent upon availability of information. Only vehicles produced for sale in the US or Canada are eligible for North American certification.

parallax_ca underside12/01/2020 21:44:08photos of underside pls... rust and rot are notorious on these. was this on BAT recently?
-
Re: underside12/01/2020 22:33:48Hi parallax_ca This car has never appeared on Bring a Trailer or any other auction website. The underside is primarily new metal. The previous seller invested thousands into making sure it was done well. I hope to post underside photos later this week as well as post receipts for all the other work that has been done on the car.

ryanwiens Porsche 91211/24/2020 11:09:26This 912 was in my family prior to the seller purchasing it. What a beautiful vehicle. Plenty of money ($20k+) and time were spent bringing it up to it's current condition. Hope the next owner enjoys it as much as we did.
